Chapter Fourteen
A while later, Marla heard a car pulling up into the narrow drive in front of her parentsâ house. âI think theyâre here, Mom.â
Her mother headed to the front door while Marla double-checked the door to Gabbyâs room. Her daughter was used to sleeping in noisy houses, but Marla couldnât risk Gabby waking up tonight and seeing a man she didnât know standing in her grandparentsâ home.
When she peeked in, Gabby was curled up with her favorite worn bunny rabbit, her eyes closed in a peaceful slumber. Marla closed the door and let out a long sigh.
When she walked back toward the living room, her mom and dad were hugging each other tight. Mom wiped at her eyes and kept patting his shoulder. âAre you sure youâre all right?
âIâm okay, honey,â Dad said. âWeâre all okay.â
Alec glanced from them to Marla. Without waiting for him to say anything, she rushed into his arms. âThank you so much.â
âShhh,â he said. âI didnât do that much. Iâm just glad everyone is alive and accounted for.â
Marla stood back, her pulse jumping around in an erratic nervousness. âItâs been a long night. We were so worried.â She went over and hugged her dad, too.
Her mom held Dadâs arm. âNow, sit down right there in your chair. Alec, find a seat. We have sandwiches and coffee.â
Dad let out a chuckle. âI never thought Iâd actually enjoy you forcing me to sit down, Joyce. But itâs such a lovely, bossy sound. I love you.â
Mom got teary-eyed again. âI love you, too, silly. Donât scare me like that again, you hear?â
âI sure do. Now bring on the pampering.â Dad winked at Marla. âIâll milk this for all itâs worth.â
Alec chuckled. âSee, I told you heâs fine.â Then he glanced toward Marlaâs mom. âThank you for the offer of food and coffee, Mrs. Reynolds, but I probably should get going. Itâs bad out there and the roads are flooded in places.â
âTook us twice as long to get home,â Dad pointed out, nursing his swollen right arm. âI havenât seen rain like this in a long time.â
Marla wanted Alec to stay but she couldnât bring herself to tell him that. Mom took care of that problem.
âAlec, sit down. You canât leave without letting us at least feed you.â
âMom, itâs past midnight,â Marla said, giving Alec an apologetic smile and a way out if he wanted one. âHe might want to go home and get some sleep.â
âOh, Iâm sorry,â Mom said, putting a hand to her mouth. âI didnât think about how late it is.â
Alecâs gaze moved from Mom to Marla, clear regret marking his features. âIt is late. You all need to get some sleep, too.â
He turned for the door while Marlaâs teeth pressed against her bottom lip. âAlec, wait,â she said, the imprint of trying to keep him here burning against her skin. âOne cup of coffee and then you can go.â
He held the doorknob, his head down. âAre you sure about that?â
Marla swallowed back her fears. âOf course Iâm sure.
